Do you see that right over there to the left? See the beautiful bowl and the interesting gourds. See it? Enjoy. It’s about as much creative fall decorating as you will see from me.
I read this blog yesterday that a couple of friends had shared on Facebook. It was really good, very insightful, written by a guy to Moms. He was telling us to chill out, basically. Our kids will be okay if they don’t speak seven languages by the time they’re three, etc. One big one was to show ourselves some grace and stop comparing ourselves to the women on Pinterest because that’s not what equals a great woman, mom, wife, life sort of thing.
Man, thank goodness I gave up that pipe dream about 20-some years ago! Ha! Because the gourds in a bowl that I already owned? It really and I mean really, is as good as it gets. Oh yes, I look at it and think, “I KNOW there’s something more creative that can be happening here.” And I have no idea what. And yes, I suppose I can do a pinterest search – but the fact that walking to a fabric store with an end mission in mind makes me sweat and my heart to start racing (no joke) – tells me the gourds in a bowl may just have to do.
Oh, I do wish it were different sometimes. My friend Beth, she is the perfect mix of creative mind, applicable skills to pull it off, and being normal. What she does is totally normal, functional, super duper cute, and she’s so awesome and down to earth so it just increases my love for her. I will sometimes get an idea and think, “I really need to pull out my inner Beth, I know I have it somewhere in me.” (I think I really don’t). Or my sister. We come from the exact same gene pool ya know. And somehow she received all of the creative talent.
There are definite times I have my moments frustration. But God saw fit to give me some of the most easy going kids who have never ever once mentioned to me how disappointed they are that I don’t have a Fall spread of awesomeness on our counters.
Instead I have a daughter that is like, “The MORE SPRINKLES THE BETTER on this fabulous cake we made from the box.” And who the one time I did “sew” puppy back together b/c he had a hole looked at me and said, “But I can’t see the string Mom!” So, we sewed him up 5 more times, with different colors of string, making sure our work could be seen and yes, recognized (not hard with that).
But, I am a Mama who gets all dirty and wind blown so we can go on hay rack rides and play in the pumpkin patch and slide down a slide into a whole thing of corn kernels.
I am a Mama who thinks that the world needs more color and if it just happens to be on little feet or a driveway, well that’s okay.
I’m even the Mom who encourages her kids to scream and pretend and generally have a blast faking it in the hurricane-type game thing. And when I’m not taking a picture I’m standing outside with my hands up, fake screaming right along with them.
So, I think I’m doing all right, even if all I’m staring at, to the right of my computer, is gourds in a bowl. It’ll have to do because I figure that God doesn’t make mistakes. God made me, me made the gourds and orchestrated the bowl – it’s a combo that will just have to do and taking it a step further, be celebrated.
