Goal Setting
I’m a big goal setter. Always have been. In some areas of my life it has been so easy. Athletics – what is my goal per sport? What is my goal per event? What’s my personal record and how much faster/higher/longer/farther do I want to throw/run/hurdle/jump? And what does it take to get there? Lets write some goals around even the baby steps to attain my big goals and then track those… and on and on.
Work? Easy. I have a BHAG. It’s Big. It’s Hairy. It’s Audacious. It’s my goal. It is downright laughable. It is written on a Post-It note and on the wall right next to my list of Bible verse promises that I need to be reminded of on a daily basis and a quote I read, “Today I will do what others won’t; so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t.” It’s a number, a big number. A number I will not hit this year. But some year… maybe not even next year. But the year after that? I want it. I won’t stop until I surpass it.
So goals. I can write them. I know how.
And now I’m downright failing, and struggling at them!! When it comes to personal goals not associated with accomplishments that are SPECIFIC for me as an adult now… gah. Do you have personal goals? What areas? I think back to what I wrote and yes there are some that I have which are specific around finances. But see, that’s another area where the goals come easy b/c it is so measurable.
I think this part drives Raymonn crazy. He is a dreamer and has HUGE goals that he thinks about and talks about every day. I like to think I do. But when I think about it mine are generic. I want to grow in my belief and faith. I want my children to be healthy and happy and love and pursue Jesus with a servants heart. I want to be a leader both of my children as a great example and of people and I want to be a great leader, not just the title but a true leader and all of the truths that come with it.
Is this enough? What do you do? What goals do you have? How did you come up with them? When March 30, 2022 comes around – will you stop a moment, look up, and say, “This is good. I’ve done good. I’ve accomplished many a goal in the past 10 years. I’m there.” How will you measure this?
Am I over thinking it? Help!

I have only one major lifetime goal the others such as faith and health I consider prayers. But what I do have are daily attainable goals. Tiffany like me you are someone who needs to see results and if we don’t we get stressed out. I set a household goal a year ago and it has worked out fabulously. I like to collect things or memories and over the years I have kept a lot of things and my goal for the last year was to simply throw one thing away a day and I have succeeded! Now my house is 1000 times less cluttered I’m a lot happier and it’s actually kept me busy and organized. I have set a new goal and that’s deciding a career path I actually want however that is proving very very very difficult. Oh well I’m a few years before Bo goes to school! My advice that took me 34 years is set goals that you can visibly attain daily!
Yes, you’re over-thinking it. Raymonn seems to be a “big picture” kind of guy. He dreams big, and that’s awesome. It’s okay to be a “small picture” person though. In my experience, these people make great partnerships. The big picture people come up with the ideas, and the small picture people get them done. And don’t forget, the day-to-day things you do every day, you’re accomplishing goals you may have set for yourself years ago. When you were a little girl, did you dream of someday being a wife and a mother? You’re doing it! So like Jamee commented, all those small goals add up, and give you a sense of accomplishment. Don’t discount how important they are!
Ive never been much of a goal setter but as I age (mature) I learn the truth of an old adage … Failure to plan is a plan for failure. You’re blessed to have learned this lesson at a young age! Just remember to hold them loosely because some times God has different plans!
