I Just Don’t Get It

I saw this You Tube video that you need to check out this PSA Advertisement

It is heartbreaking, because it is real. I remember after the Chris Brown/Rihanna thing happened being shocked by a study that showed most High Schoolers (over 50%) said that they still support Chris Brown because some people “just deserve it.” I really didn’t believe the article… until I spoke about it with my nieces (Grade 9 and 11) last weekend. I sat there with my heart breaking as not only them but my BIL and SIL agreed that “sometimes people are pushed into hitting” and the reason Rihanna must have gotten back together with Chris Brown is because she must have lied to the police and now feels bad, those pictures looked doctored up…

I was so speechless. I was sad. I was disgusted. Really? This is what our society actually believes? NO ONE deserves to be hit. Nobody should be pushed into hitting someone else. I’m sure they were fighting and she was pissed and he was pissed. You don’t fight. You don’t hit someone you love. I don’t care if you have to drive to a parking lot and get out of the car to call a cab – there are other options.

I just keep thinking, “What if it was you?” “What if it was some boyfriend who hit your daughter/niece/sister?” “Would you sit there and tell me that some people deserve it?” It makes me angry, and that’s putting it lightly. I don’t even know what else to say about it…

  1. It’s a total shame but yep, most of our society believes that it’s “okay” to hit if you were provoked. It’s really sad! Boys are no longer raised to respect women and girls are no longer raised to demand respect. It’s a vicious cycle I’m afraid.
